On Syria

A change of tack

It would seem that someone at the BBC has been reading this blog and specifically a previous post about migrants.

In that post I defined the difference between refugees, migrants and immigrants and suggested that those leaving places such as Syria were in fact refugees. Treating them as ‘migrants’ suggests that they are opportunists like those at Calais trying to get into England rather than escaping attrocities and war.

This very evening, a BBC report into escapes from Syria used the word ‘refugee’ for the first time and used this word frequently.

Are we now being manipulated into thinking of these people as humans, desperate to leave a terrible life for refuge. . . which indeed they are?

Is the humanising of these people now an attempt to soften our hearts and let us see these poor souls for what they are?

Finally, is this in a very synical way a pre-emptive strike by the UK government to reduce the ‘migrant’ statistics for people entering the UK to be re-calculated as some of them are ‘refugees’?
