BBC News: Ground control bids farewell to Philae comet lander
Philae – The Plucky Little Lander
Fighting against all the odds from its separation from its parent Philae’s life was short and endearing.
Instead of landing in a crater with a vie of the sun it bounced and ended up on the edge of the crater yet in the few hours of battery life it had, it performed some amazing physics.
Philae went to sleep, as there wasn’t enough sunlight to keep it awake yet months later it briefly woke up again but only for a short time.
We have heard nothing since.
It is hard not to get emotionally attached to the lander, it wasn’t a failure but it wasn’t a roaring success either.
Now finally, it is assumed dead, lost in space.. well on a trackable asteroid but covered in dust so it can’t generate power or crushed beneath falling rock.
