The God Complex In Action
What is the God Complex?
The God Complex is a state of mental self-assurance that is induced when one achieves greatness. It is an extreme ego. For example, a person who has ruled a political party may feel untouchable, they may feel that their every word is taken as gospel. After all why would anyone question their authority? After all, to those minions below them, these people must surely be seen as a God.
The ‘Yes Men’ don’t help
Not every God is benevolent. Some Gods are in fact belief vengeful, striking fear into ther followers, “Do as I say or be dammed to hell for all eternity”. This was the type of God those followers had in great Western Land in the middle ages. Now of course that God is much more docile. He/She/It hasn’t played with hell-fire and brimstone for quite some time.
In any event, when you’re in a position of absolute power, you can be a vengeful God or a God of love and compassion. However, absolute power does indeed corrupt absolutely. Those temper tantrums are quite often placated by a band of ‘Yes men’ (and/or women etc. etc.)
We have all seen the films of te great and famous being followed around by bands of sycophants who will tell the God exactly what their God wants to hear in order to protect themselves.
Sometimes though, their God needs to be brought back down to earth, a brave move for any sycophant wanting to keep their position/life.
Examples of God Complex In Action
The Untouchable
Think of a country ruled by a raving lunatic. There are a few but the most obvious is North Korea.
The untouchable fat-boy-with-stupid-haircut enjoys a rich and lavish lifestyle very much at the cost of his admiring population. Yet those who ask question sch as Please sir can we have some food?” or “Please sir can we have a little teeny weeny bit of self governance?” have all disappeared, they have been purged. This person is at the zenith of his power and one can rest assured that the assassins are lining up. He is f course surrounded by ‘Yes Men’ which is probably why the country is letting him play with bottle rockets.
The Dead Cert
Think of a politician who was so certain of the outcome of a vote, he threw his career away on an ill considered bet.
The problem with raving-loony-God-Complex sufferers is of course that they have a totally warped view of the world. Go on Mr Cameron, call the Euro-vote, it’s a dead cert that we’ll vote remain.. I mean to say … look at the opposition…the whole country is behind you”
In fairness, this may not be so much God-Complex as bad advice. to those who gathered the data, the ‘Whole Country’ may well have been the silent majority in the Greater London area. As with all G-C sufferers, the certainty was so great that a backup plan… just in case…. wasn’t necessary.
Oh dear.
Know Thine Enemy
The most basic of battle plans, Tsun Tzu the great Chinese commander knew this thousands of years ago, it is required reading for anyone planning anything that involves competition, war or worse, politics.
Surrounded by sycophants, ill informed advisers and a god like feeling of total unassailable authority is a truly excellent recipe for electoral defeat. Add into this recipe an ineffective campaign and the result is certain defeat as indeed it was… almost. A near total failure makes for the strangest of allies.
God Complexes through history
With the knowledge you have gained by reading this article it now becomes easy to spot those who are in the unfortunate position of needing a really good slap..
Adolf Hitler was of course the most extreme example. Driven by hatred and rage whilst surrounded by those only wanting to preserve their own worthless lives led to a real nightmare with millions of victims.
After a successful campaign in the Falkland Islands which cemented her position at the lead of the UK, Margaret Thatcher’s fall from grace was spectacular.
In the same vein, wanting to secure his future in a similar way with a quick war was Tony Blair. Untouchable after three straight general election wins, no exit plan led to his untimely (in that it took too long) demise.
It seems then that the God Complex will always be with us, it is a human failing which cannot be stopped because those who get it have egos larger than life itself. This means that to them it never appears as a problem, only affirmation of their value.
The sycophants will of course always be subservient, it is their role to be spineless and interested only in self preservation.
Maybe all countries should have a limit on the number of times politicians can be elected. A step in the right direction.
