Its All About Agreement
The Definition of Agreement
It is an interesting thing that the first definition of “Agreement” found on the internet is as follows…
Whether the website concerned has done this on purpose or not, the coincidence is uncanny.
There Will Be An Agreement
It seems a little counter-intuitive to think that there will not be a Brexit agreement. There is far too much at stake.
Not the trade deals, nor the world of high finance or even the equality of Europeans in the UK and vice versa. No it is the things that really matter. The thing that is most important to anyone in the negotiations… it is reputation and result.
There is no doubt that agreement will be made, after lots of posturing, game play and press releases yet the manner of the agreement will always be at the forefront of the lead players.
To be seen to be victorious is the only way forward, magnanimous in defeat is never a political option. Instead such defeats are always explained away as a small victory.
Whilst we are dealing with our European friends with the traditional mistrust, we can only assume that Rumpelstiltskin is not on the other team. When we do get to an agreement, we can be sure that we won’t have to give away our first born.
Let the politicians haggle and whine, fight and back-stab. It’s what they’re good at, such distractions are the vest way of hiding incompetence.
The Role of Commerce
When it comes to the push, whatever these agreements are, trade will always be the thing that makes a country rich or poor. The Great British Empire was built on trade (OK with a significant amount of bad behaviour) and made the UK one of the world’s most powerful and rich countries. Yet several world conflicts later this tiny island remains influential on the world stage.
The UK should be good at trade agreements and even when the politicians fail to reach a decent agreement as they inevitably will, the real world will take over.
Commerce will find a way, it always has and always will.
